Prototype 1 Review (PC)

  The Review (Contains Spoilers)

I know this game is recent, not old. But this game is one of those games that you can either play once or multiple times. One thing expected from this video game is the lack story depth. Hold on! I'm not done yet. This video game, in my opinion, is a mixture of Grand Theft Auto and games based on Marvel and DC superheroes. So it's basically Grand Theft Auto with superpowers, at least on the game play department. Story-wise, it's different.

The game's story line is about Doctor Alex Mercer, a test subject for GENTEK who is on the quest to find out the truth about the experiments and how it led to him being mutated into the coolest hero yet, and the rest of the citizens being turned into mutated monsters. Apparently, the military is involved again. The game's storyline goes along the line of Resident Evil territory. The story is synonymous to something conspiracy theorists talk about-experiments on people going wrong- and this is the premise of the story.

Game Play
The game allows the player to choose from a variety of mutations for the main character. Of course, these mutations are only accessible after being purchased. The exceptions are the armor, infrared and infected visions which are unlocked through the missions. The rest can be purchased with evolution points (EP) which is accumulated with each kill/consumption.

The game, in general, is fun  for those who like to waste monsters for hours. There are a variety of ways to kill opponents, the number of weapons available is limited if the main character's weapons are excluded. Nonetheless, the use of these weapons are optional and missions can be accomplished even without the aid of these.

Posting for a picture while alarm is raised. Apparently the AI is too lazy to fly close enough to shoot.

The early part of the game is interesting because there are many ways to kill opponents such as sneaking up on them and using the Whipfist to snatch them or go all out war on them but this can feel repetitive when you keep doing these for too long. The Patsy and Artillery abilities are interesting due to their usefulness. The former can be used to point to another AI when the player triggered an alarm amongst the military and the latter can be used to bring down a huge crowd of enemies. The game play has a decent number things to do such as the side missions for easy EP. Experiment is the word that goes with this. The replay factor also of the game gradually sinks as it is played over and over.

What about the game's AI? Playing the game at normal difficulty already shows some problems in this regard. The AI can give the impression of being too stupid or too smart sometimes. They can have difficulty finding you or not because of the spawning problem. Spawning of enemy AI is an obvious flaw of the game, military and monsters alike. You can see them just spawn on the spot if you're really on the lookout. This makes the military good at "sneaking" up on you. Just take a crowd of civilians and cause some chaos. Depending on how far you've progressed in the game and even if there are soldiers patrolling around, a tank can just pop up. This rarely happens in game but it does happen.

What Else Could Possibly Help Improve the Game?

Development of other characters. It would be interesting to have mission with the other characters because just being in control of Alex Mercer for 10+ hours can easily get boring. This is like playing an improved hack and slash game. Really. Being in control of fragile characters takes the player off the superior role even for just a moment can introduce a huge difference to the game. Some ending-altering actions can also benefit the game. If Alex succeeds in saving his sister, what difference will it make to the ending? After all this is an open-ended video game so why not take advantage of that freedom as well?

When it comes to technical issues, there isn't much to be said for PC gamers. We all use differing hardware. I played this on a Samsung R439 Laptop with only 2GB RAM. It does lag when encountering huge volumes of smoke. But adding some more RAM can surely fix this problem. Players with better hardware will no doubt experience a smoother game.

Conclusion

The game is fun and interesting, the only let down is the repetitiveness of some of the things the player can do. So it is up to the player to make things interesting.  Adding more artistic touch to the armor skin also helps and the same goes for the enemies, they all look like clones. Every new game comes out sporting out amazing HD graphics with bump mapping and antialiasing stuff but can't even do something about generating random faces. So for those who want to play this game even though it's been out a few years ago, give it a try but don't play it for too long.
